Introduction

The existing detached two-car garage is being converted to an accessory dwelling unit in the backyard, including a kitchenette, dining area, living area, bedroom, bathroom, and exterior yard supply room. The bedroom is separated from the living areas by a seven-foot high wall, allowing indirect light from the skylights in the living area to fill the entire unit. Exposed structural roof framing beams create a sense of human scale and break up the expanse of the ceiling. The only totally enclosed room, the bathroom, also has a skylight. New exterior wood shakes that match the main house and a new arbor over the entry complement the concurrent renovation of the landscape. This project is currently under construction.
