Introduction
This stately house on a beautiful tree-line street had great “bones” and a wonderfully proportioned and detailed exterior, but needed to be adapted to today’s lifestyle. The kitchen was moved to the rear of the house and combined with a new informal living area to take advantage of panoramic views of San Francisco Bay and beyond from that side of the house. A free-standing garage in the back yard was torn down and a new one built against the lower level of the house on this downslope lot to open up the back yard and create a deck on the garage roof that is accessible from the kitchen/living area at the main level. The back yard was then re-graded, repaved, and landscaped. The former master suite was combined with another bedroom to create a new master suite with walk-in closet and bathroom, new guestrooms and a study were created, the interior of the lower level was connected to the pool deck, and the existing bedrooms and bathrooms were completely renovated.
