Introduction
An accessory dwelling unit is being created in the same location as a former back yard structure in order to provide an in-law unit for the homeowner. After determining that the existing structure was unusable, the decision to create a new structure allowed for a design that responds to the site: a long narrow structure at the side of the spacious back yard creates room for views across the yard from both the main house and the new unit while allowing for good natural cross ventilation; creating a covered patio between the living/dining/kitchen area and the bedroom/bathroom area creates a shaded outdoor breezeway and flexibility with respect to how the two areas are used; and the combination of the roof slope and a new outdoor trellis brings filtered light into the unit in the morning while protecting the interior from the hot afternoon sun. This project is currently under construction.
